Picture this, spend the afternoon with your girlfriend and a couple of friends on the surf and sand of Long Beach, NY. Beers, mimosa and waves to burn. When the time arrives, hop into the ride of your friend, grab a grand coffee from Starbucks and sit tight, you are on your way to play a rock and roll show. You’re awakened by a cell call by your friend, one of the head employees of Tattoo Shot Lounge and singer of GAS NYC, Jonny Kooklyn.
The Conversation went as follows…
Jonny Kooklyn: ‘Unfortunately the first band has cancelled and you’re on at eight sharp!’ Carlos the Chords: ‘No prob, Jon I’ll be there ’Tattoo Shot Lounge‘ and ready to go.
Being a performer you learn after a while that you have to adapt to change logically and efficiently. Waking up just as I arrived, check in with the door rep and up the heavily postered and stickered stairs. Pass the tattoo parlor and place my bodyboard bag, guitar and gear opposite the stage and prepare for the show and a helluva nite. Still picturing it?
Located in the heart of Coney Island on 1205 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, NY the Tattoo Shot Lounge is the epicenter for rock and roll music entertainment in the area. Plenty of mosh, wallflower and seating space. A full bar with signature cocktails and specials all night. A Dj cooking up rock and metal tunes continually between sets. Bands have a back line consisting of mesa cabinets, Carvin 8 x 10 rig with head, full Yamaha drum kit with all hardware, including cymbals and hi hats. Annnnnd with its tattoo parlor and artist who is locally and nationally recognized, inking all night how rock and roll is it!!!!
There is a reason why Jonny Kooklyn is hustling from door to door of this venue doing business every weekend…he books the best independent bands within and beyond our state. GAS NYC, Connies ‘California, rock and roll/punk’, Shango ’local BK metal’, Sabbra Cadabra ’excellent Black Sabbath cover,’ Thrash Inc ‘early Metallica cover,’ Dj Alex Kayne and my own outfit ‘Transcend the Core‘ were booked on this night. Making it the most mind busting local show I’ve seen all year. I mean watch the videos and see how interestingly amazing the bands sound.
The best day of my summer…surf, sun and slew of fantastic, fast and passionate bands. Pictuuuure that!!!
Thank you Jonny for the booking, Derek Soto of Sinestra Studios for filming video and taking pictures, Connies for the shirt and cd, Miguel for the ride home and the ripping bands that played, holy moly, I’m still buzzing!
Cheers to summer surf, rock and roll and Coney Island.

Transcend the Core hit Arena Queens May 5th for Cinco de Mayo Rocks Arena Queens. A diverse lineup of bands were on tap for the show. These included Gods Green Earth, Metric Halo, Ice Cube Ninjah, Like a Death and Moniasin. It was TTC’s first time playing the venue and even playing a show in Queens, we heard so much about the new club that we were stoking until we came off the stage. Read on and find out why.
Arena Queens is a new rock club in Elmhurst, Queens, New York. The dark and capacious, rock and roll internals of the venue has a full bar where dancers stand upon as rockers crank out tunes onstage. The stage technology of this joint is mentionable. Full PA, monitor wedges, bass cabinet, head and four cabs for guitars. As for lighting, led lights and scanners and for more mood, smoke and haze machines. There is an area outback with tables and chairs, where you can hangout too.
Gods Green Earth are a full on party, with all the thrills and frills for the ultimate weekend night. I’ve seen them twice and each time its a cool party of slick rock/metal/stoner rock originals. They push some covers during their set that include ‘Rebel Yell’ by Billy Idol. Whether they’re making fun of each other, busting out banging solos or the dancers ‘that are part of the show’ are doing the most professional of pole dance moves, this all makes them a fun band to check out. Catch them on a weekend when you don’t have to run the rat race the next day.
Transcend the Core were enamored with the technology, layout and atmosphere of the Arena. The sound engineer know exactly how to temper our heavy, energetic, dynamic sound with just mixing and tweaking of lights as we sliced through gnarly familiars. I felt like I was in a spaceship at times (please refer to the two pics above)
With bright, strobes and a smoke machine leading in and out of the twisting, turning breakdowns of ours tracks. As I played and looked at the vast spectator landscape of Arena I turn to the bar and the dancers are in total groove on the bar as TTC hammer on. I remember this was an inside joke between band mates later on. It feels good to see others enjoy something we work so hard and are passionate about.

For my mom, girlfriend and gfs from the scene and beyond in respects to mom’s day!!!
Punk and Thrash Bash had its 2nd party April 13th at the Blue Room, Secaucus, New Jersey. The soiree harnesses some of the fastest and thrashiest bands from the New York and New Jersey area. That night Transcend the Core, Straphangers, Ashes of Amber, Egokill and Sector Zero were on call.
Some talk of the Blue Room… The venue is a year old live performance space in Secaucus, New Jersey. Tim McMurtie of the Murder League All-stars puts together metal, punk, hip hop… performances at the space. With it’s already good and evolving sound system and engineers, they also have an adequate audience area for circle pits and swaying with your lady on hip hop nights. I have to also mention the full bar with ridiculously low-priced drinks.
This was Transcend the Core’s second time at the Room. The system and sonic feel of the space is becoming like home
The only that really changes are the faces. Anywhere, anything you do like, play music, surf, skate… after a while you get to know your environment and the locals. Little things you learn like the engineer and bartender’s names…the Taco Bell for eats and the gas station down the highway. This all makes for a more comfortable show and performance of your music. TTC blew through ‘Deft March’ ‘Denial’ ‘Conscious’ ‘Silhouette’s Speak’…to ours and the crowds hearts content. The scene dug it and we even sold a couple of cds.
I’m a spectator and student as much as a musician at shows and I’m always open to be blown to parts by some cool act. Since 2001 Straphangers have been commuting the scene and causing moshpits in the NYC area. I saw them a couple of years ago they are still blowing my mind. Lead singer Emily stays in true character behind main vox, swooning and pointing with the swag of someone who’s been on this rodeo before but with all the love, respect and rowdiness all while in control. The rhythm crew are firm and set a rock solid vacuum for the hardcore/punk riffigary of Taras. ‘New Black Plague’ is a track to die for.
Young thrashers Egokill are on a path of success and destruction. Tearing up the stage and pit area of the Blue Room with their frenzied war drums, acute bass lines, wizardry guitar work and well beyond schizo scream/melodic vox. Lead singer Brian gets into his fans faces and coaxed his moshers and lady moshers into maelstroms on his call. All of Egokill’s tracks are downloadable on Reverbnation.
Special shoutouts to Julio of/and the Ashes of Amber band. Transcend the Core had a stoking time hanging with you guys. Was a pleasure meeting Emily of the Straphangers too. Next time I will definitely grab a t-shirt
Btw the cd rips.
Live venues are like a playground for performance folks. Tim is creating an impartial and fascinating scene at the Blue Room. The artists, bands, themed and benefit events are professionally built and auspicious by nature. I would love a copy of Tim’s contact rolodex. So that being put here’s to rolodex’, professional bills and the Blue Room.
live on always… (((transcend the core)))
